An abandoned cart is the cheapest pool of revenue in an online store: these are people who already picked a product and stopped one step short of paying. Recovery requires two fronts: removing the reason for abandonment and building a return flow.

Why people abandon the cart

  • Total cost revealed late: shipping, fees, and timing only showing up at the end.
  • A long mandatory signup before seeing the final price.
  • Lack of a preferred payment method.
  • An unanswered question about timing, exchanges, or warranty.
  • Distrust of the store: little social proof, inconsistent layout, no visible contact.
  • Price comparison in another tab: the purchase was not cancelled, just postponed.

Notice that only the last item is outside your direct control. The rest are checkout and communication problems.

How to calculate the abandonment rate

Abandonment rate = 1 − (completed purchases ÷ carts created). Also measure abandonment within the checkout itself, step by step: identification, delivery, and payment. That breakdown is what points to where the money is actually being lost.

Diagnosis by abandonment step
Where it drops offLikely causeFirst action
Cart → identificationUnknown shipping cost and timingCalculate shipping in the cart
Identification → deliveryLong formReduce fields and add zip code autocomplete
Delivery → paymentExpensive or slow shippingFree-shipping threshold and an economy option
Payment → confirmationMissing method or declined paymentAdd instant payment options and review fraud screening

A recovery flow that works

  1. 1 hour: a simple reminder, no discount, with the product and a direct link back to the cart.
  2. 24 hours: objection handling: delivery time, exchange policy, reviews.
  3. 72 hours: a conditional incentive (shipping or a coupon), with a real deadline.

A discount on the first contact teaches the customer to abandon on purpose. Start with friction, end with incentive: the same logic as objection handling applied to email.

What to track

Minimum recovery dashboard

  • Abandonment rate by checkout step.
  • Recovery rate: orders completed after the flow ÷ eligible abandoned carts.
  • Revenue recovered and margin after any coupon.
  • Unsubscribes and complaints per message sent.
  • Consent on file for email and WhatsApp, in line with data privacy law.

Consent is not a legal footnote: sending without a legal basis hurts deliverability and exposes the brand. The topic is covered in the article on privacy law, cookies, and tracking.

Frequently asked questions about abandoned cart

Why does a customer abandon the cart?

High or late-revealed shipping costs, a long mandatory signup, too few payment options, slowness, and a lack of trust signals are the most frequent causes.

How do I calculate the cart abandonment rate?

Divide the number of completed purchases by the number of carts created, then subtract from 1. The result, as a percentage, is the abandonment rate.

What is the best time for the first follow-up?

The first message tends to perform best within the first hour after abandonment, while purchase intent is still active.

Can I send a WhatsApp recovery message?

Yes, provided there is a legal basis and the contact was supplied by the customer, with a clear opt-out option under data privacy law.
